About Sete Cidades National Park

Sete Cidades National Park

Sete Cidades National Park encompasses the vast volcanic caldera of Sete Cidades on the western part of São Miguel Island, the largest island in the Azores archipelago of Portugal. The park centers around two stunning crater lakes known as Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake), whose contrasting water colors create a unique natural spectacle. The caldera formed approximately 22,000 years ago after a massive volcanic eruption, and its complex geomorphology now features rim cliffs, fumaroles, and lush forests. The park’s subtropical maritime climate supports diverse flora including endemic azorean laurel and hydrangeas, as well as fauna such as native birds and amphibians. Visitors to Sete Cidades can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including hiking along trails that meander around the rim and down to the lakes, biking on paved routes, kayaking on the calm crater lakes, and scenic drives with incredible lookout points like Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, which offers panoramic views of the twin lakes. The historic village of Sete Cidades is nestled inside the caldera and adds a cultural dimension to the visit. The park’s geological significance combined with its natural beauty attracts geologists, nature lovers, and photographers alike, making it a must-see destination for those exploring the Azores.
